After the successful battle at the Senate, the ruling party moved to the House of Representatives to also crown its candidates in the person of Femi Gbajabiamila and Idris Wase as the anointed Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively. Again there was a repeat of the victory for the ruling All Progressive Party (APC) at the House of Representative (HoR) with Gbajabiamila emerged as the Speaker after scoring the highest number of votes against his rival Umar Mohammed Bago.
With the pattern of votes at both chamber of the Senate and HoR, it was obvious that there was a bi-partisan approach to the election.
At the Senate, 17 Senators from the main opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP voted in favour of the ruling party candidate. The PDP had on Monday agreed to support the candidature of Alli Ndume.
The APC has 62 lawmakers while the opposition PDP has 44 and Young Democratic Party (YDP) has one.
Before he emerged the Speaker, Gbajabiamila has faced many legal hurdles, especially from the oppositions who have dragged him before the court over an allegation that he was an ex-convict.
He was alleged to have been sentenced by a United States court for illegally withholding his client $25,000.
