African richest man, Aliko Dangote said his company will help Nigeria government to construct a major road inlet of the country's busiest seaport in Lagos at around twenty-five percent less than the lowest bid submitted by contractors to the government.
Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), the holding company for the richest man conglomerates has offered to construct the road leading to the Lagos seaport and recoup the cost through deductions from its tax for over a period of three years.
Although, DIL is yet to disclose how much it will be spending on the critical road project, one of its executive directors, Devakumar Edwin, said the company will be saving the government huge resources by its initiative to take over the construction of the road.
"We volunteered to construct the Apapa/Oworonshoki long highway at a cost that will be about 15 to 25 percent less than the lowest bid on the road," Edwin said.
He noted that Dangote holding company hope to get back the cost of funding the project after three years "by removing the sum from the tax we are supposed to pay.”
Nigeria, Africa's top economy currently faces huge social and economic infrastructural deficit that experts say will cost between seven to ten trillion naira annually to fix.
Minister of power, housing, and works, Babatunde Fashola had a few weeks ago hinted at the move by the government to resort to private sector funding of some critical road projects to reduce the burden on government finance.
Dangote, however, denied speculations that government has granted it ten years tax holiday in lieu of the works to be done on the road projects.
