Nigeria said it has started fulfilling its promises to promote development in the country's oil-rich Niger Delta in a bid to curb militancy and help boost oil output from the region.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said this at the end of his visit to Ondo State on Tuesday as he rounds up his consultation with the oil producing region of the West African country.
He said all the demand made by stakeholders in the region are being implemented incrementally, adding that it will soon start issuing licences for the operations of modular refineries in the region, while the Maritime University will commence operations next month in fulfillment of its promises to the region leaders.
"Every one of them (demand by the region) is being implemented and they are being implemented incrementally. For example, we said we were going to open the Maritime University and we are opening in October," the vice president said.
"We have said we are going to do modular refineries; we have released the guidelines and licenses are being issued. We are engaging with the communities, we are engaging with the state governments."
He said Igbokoda in Ilaje Local Government of Ondo state, which is the oil producing community in has demanded a visit, "so we are completing the round of visits to the oil producing communities with this particular visit, so it is one of the consultations with the oil producing communities."
Osinbajo, who held fort for the president in acting capacity during President Buhari's medical vacation to the United Kingdom disclosed that the oil producing community in Ondo state will soon enjoy power supply.
"We have talked about getting power to Ilaje Local Government, the contract has been awarded, 600 million naira has been paid," he said.
According to him, the project has been abandoned for over 10 years "but we are doing it and ensuring that power comes to this Local Government Area and to this community."
"So, everything is being done, it is incremental but we are taking them step by step. The Ogoni clean up as you know has already started.
